55 years ago, Helen started volunteering with children’s programming. She has not stopped serving since!
“I cannot imagine not working with children, teaching them to know Jesus’s love. They have an eagerness to learn and accept the truths they are taught.”
“Children’s ministry has its own struggles,” Helen said, “like times and culture changing throughout the years.” Serving while working full-time was a challenge as well but Helen has learned to adapt and ask God for help.
“There’s nothing more exciting than spending time with children. I’m currently involved in Sunday School, Crossroads at DuJardin Elementary School, and Awana. If you want a blessing, I encourage you to consider becoming involved in serving the Lord in some way: Listen to Bible verses at Awana or spend time with some amazing boys and girls at DuJardin on Tuesday afternoons. God will bless you immeasurably!”
Helen’s favorite memory from serving in KidsQuest has been watching kids grow from making gingerbread houses together in Sunday School to becoming current leaders in the church, like current Bloomingdale Church staff members Chris and Brent Steinke. “I get tears in my eyes as I watch these boys and girls grow up, especially to be baptized and serve the Lord.”
At Bloomingdale Church, KidsQuest programs are designed to be fun, safe, and a welcoming place for families. But what makes these programs run? Volunteers – adults and teens who give their time to serving kids and families. Thank you, Helen, and 200+ other volunteers!

For our Crossroads Kids Club Christmas celebration, the children showed off their acting skills by learning and performing a nativity play – all in one day! As a way to share the beginning of the Gospel story, Crossroads participants portrayed the 2000 year old story of God’s son coming to Earth humbly as a baby in a manger, surrounded by barn animals and shepherds. With refreshments and treats for the parents afterwards, it was a heart-warming experience for all of our Crossroads families. We’re so proud of our Crossroads Kids for all of their hard work!
Crossroads Kids Club is a weekly school-based, church-led ministry that seeks to help children find and follow Jesus. Club meets Tuesdays at our local public school DuJardin Elementary and features Bible lessons, small groups, games and a snack. The goal is to connect caring adults with children to form healthy relationships that will point the children toward Jesus.
Children attending DuJardin Elementary School (Bloomingdale) are welcome at Crossroads Kids Club. Join trained KidsQuest volunteers for an after school club to have fun and learn about values found in the Bible.
What is Crossroads Kids Club?
Crossroads Kids Club is a free after-school club for elementary school children. Using the Bible as a base, children attending a Crossroads Kids Club program have a great time while learning positive life skills such as honesty, respect for parents, making wise choices and being trustworthy. Each club session has three main components. There is a large group lesson, a small group discussion and a game time. Sometimes children also have the opportunity to make craft projects or to participate in service learning experiences.
Crossroads Kids Club is a safe place for children. All club programs are led by local churches. Per their signed agreement with Crossroads Kids Club each church is required to check references and conduct a background check on every adult who is part of their team. One of our key goals is to create a community of adult “cheerleaders” who will encourage your child to be the best that he or she can be. We want each adult to be a positive role model and a safe person. As well, because the club takes place in school immediately after school, we avoid safety issues related to transportation.
Crossroads Kids Club is a fun place for children. The lesson times are designed to be highly interactive and engaging. As well, kids enjoy playing a variety of games and spending time with their friends. We have found that many kids don’t want to leave when club time ends because they had such a great time!
Crossroads Kids Club is an encouraging place for children. Many of the site directors have a “student of the week” to recognize and celebrate each child. Still others are careful to recognize children on their birthdays. Always, the leadership seeks to be affirming and caring. We believe that each child is made in the image of God and has incredible value. Each one is unique and we hope that participating in a Crossroads Kids Club will help a child to see that they are special because God made them for a purpose that they alone can fulfill.
Crossroads Kids Club is a national organization, based in Streamwood, Il. www.crossroadskidsclub.com
Tuesday October 7 2014, was the Launch Party for our church’s first Crossroads Kids Club. Twenty (1st-5th grade) children came into the school band room to play games, decorate pumpkins, build balloon towers, create food creations from marshmallows and pretzels, and win prizes. The club also included Bible stories, developing social skills, and building character. Dave L. leads our club alongside nine volunteers, who work directly with the children. Our hope is to reach to children and families who perhaps have no church, with the positive message of Jesus Christ and his love.
