The Texts: “The Story” Chapter 19 ; Haggai 1-2 ; Ezra 1-6 ; Zechariah 1&8 .   ….    Note: You may have to click the “read more” button below to reveal the message outline and audio links   ….     The Context: Many of the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon [now Persia] when Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 BC. Then in 538 BC,  King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jewish people to return and rebuild their city and temple.  After two decades, the people’s commitment to work together and rebuild the temple had vanished. Nearby neighbors [the Samaritans] are opposing the construction and are threatening them. Then, a bold spokesman for God named Haggai steps up to offer words of encouragement and a straight forward admonition to the people.     ….    Pastor David Riemenschneider delivers this weeks message, the next in the series on “The Story” , a chronological journey through the entire Bible. The Jews have stopped following God again, and following their own “stuff” again. Instead of using their God-given gifts wisely, they offer God the “leftovers”. When you put your priorities into wrong pursuits, what you have just dries up and withers away.
